Zusammenfassung

The Kepler-Kommission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences was constituted in November 1934 to edit Johannes Kepler’s collected works, the Kepler Gesammelte Werke (22 volumes in 26, 1937–2017). This paper tells the history of the commission from the fate of Kepler’s manuscripts after 1630, through their purchase for St. Petersburg in 1774 and their custody at the Pulkovo observatory, to Walther von Dyck’s photographic campaign of 1928–1934, the founding of the commission and the completion of the edition. It compares the Petersburg side of this history with that of Euler’s Opera omnia and follows the manuscripts dispersed over some 80 repositories. Part four is a facsimile edition of eight documents photographed in Munich on 14 March 2024: registers of the commission’s correspondence, letters of 1928–1941, photostats of Kepler manuscripts, and reproductions of two letters of Kepler of 1630 whose originals are in Philadelphia. The paper is at the same time a pilot of a PDAI publication: text, facsimiles, transcriptions and the checks behind every statement form one source that is published as an article, as an HTML edition and as a PDAI collection for further work on Kepler.
