Famulus Elucidation

The goal

Erläuterung.
An elucidation in the reader.

A marked passage receives the note a critical edition would give it, assembled from the layers of this page. Three surfaces of the Kármán viewer give it today; their name is not fixed.

Chapter 1

What the reader sees today

In the Kármán viewer three surfaces answer for a page of the Nachlass. They were added in October 2026 and read the layers of this page; their names are working names.

Explication of a marked phrase. The reader marks a phrase of the transcription; one badge appears. Opening it finds the sentence that contains the phrase in the collection’s Stanza corpus — any letter, not only the lab sample — and shows the explication: the meaning in prose, what the sentence is about, each referent with its kind and its register identifier or unresolved, and the questions the page does not settle. The first reading takes several seconds; a sentence already read opens at once from the stored reading, and Read again re-reads it. Every sentence read this way is kept in an inquiry memory of the last forty and added to the field probe of the probe set — without an expected person; an owner verdict in the lab is what makes it a guard. 2 sentences have been read from the reader, 2 wait in the field probe, 206 explications are stored in all.

Bedeutung. A toggle over the transcript lays the normaliser’s footnotes on the page’s own text: names, places, dates, deictic phrases and named units as nested marks, the full justification on hover, three modes (marked, normalised, interlinear), and a strip of stored versions where there are any. A phrase marked in this view is explained on the fly: a stored footnote when the span is one, else a run through the stages of the normaliser on a scratch copy; nothing is written. The view reads the collection’s own sentence record when stage one has been applied to the collection; until then it reads the lab copy and labels it as such, so a page outside the lab sample shows no marks and nothing passes for production.

Ins Dossier. A page becomes sourced facts of a person’s dossier. Step one proposes the person and asks for the kind of source — curriculum vitae, list of works, self-testimony, testimony of others; step two lists the facts with their passages, each confirmed or rejected by the reader, and the open contradictions. A referent of the explication opens the same dossier in reading mode, and a deep link opens it together with the page.

The name is not fixed. The viewer says Bedeutung for the marks and Explication for the sentence; this page says Erläuterung / Elucidation, after the note a critical edition gives a passage. Understanding is what the reader does; the panel gives the edition’s account of the meaning and of the evidence for it, and marks where that account ends. One word has to be chosen, and the labels of the viewer have to follow it in one language.

Chapter 2

Where it stands

The layers exist and the viewer reaches them. What is still to be done:

  • the first stage has to be applied to the Kármán collection itself: today 0 sentences of the collection carry a sentence record, against 2,270 in the lab copy — until then the Bedeutung view shows the lab copy, labelled as a lab copy, and no marks on any other page;
  • the three surfaces are three panels; the goal is one panel that shows one piece of information per step — the sentence with its address, the note for each expression, the explication on request;
  • the critic’s findings are stored with each reading but not yet shown in the viewer;
  • the Kármán viewer has no dictionary tab; the link from a lemma of the marked sentence into the corpus dictionary exists in the edition viewers’ DICTIONARY tab and has to be brought to the Nachlass;
  • the explication has no deep link of its own; the dossier has one.

A letter without a sentence record is shown as not yet normalised — never as an empty note. An open pronoun is shown open, with its scored candidates. What the reader marks as correct or wrong in the probe lab outranks the model and becomes a guard of the probe set.
