Language.
The rules of use.
Terms, senses and usage rules, and a dictionary each collection builds from its own sentences.
Chapter 1
The language institution
A word means what its use in a language game makes of it. LWgrammar, the language institution of Famulus, records that use: term entries with their senses and finding places, and usage rules that an author or a reviewer states — for instance that neither states of affairs nor facts are bearers of truth, only propositions are. The reference store holds 528 term entries and 127 usage rules (11,704 lines of code).
Agents consult it before they write or review: a term lookup, a check of a text against the rules, a situated instruction for a writing task, a gate before a text is accepted. The same store serves every workspace, so that one terminology holds across editions, papers and reports.
Chapter 2
A dictionary from the corpus
Each collection also builds its own dictionary in the manner of the Oxford English Dictionary: headwords, senses, branches, forms and quotations, all drawn from the collection’s analysed sentences, each quotation with its address. The reader of an edition opens it in the DICTIONARY tab and can follow a quotation back to its page.
The elucidation panel will stand beside that tab: a lemma of the marked sentence that has an entry opens the dictionary at it. The approach is set out in Wittgensteinian Grammar and OED Dictionaries for AI (25 pages).
