"obj_descr": "In Villa A of the Oplontis excavation area, called Villa di Poppea after Nero's wife, a conical sundial was found in 1973. It is now kept in the depository. Oplontis was a residential city between Pompeii and Herculanum, very small but with large villas. It was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. The modern name of the city is Torre Annunziata. The dial is conical, of white marble, and in a good state of conservation with only a small part broken off at the right upper edge. Its decoration is of a very common type with two six-petalled rosettes on either side of a crescent moon on the oblique front surface. A metallic gnomon is still present on its upper side, the length of which is 85 mm.",

"df_descr": "The face shows the eleven hour lines, the equinox and the two solstitial curves. These three day curves are divided by approximately equidistant points of intersection with the hour lines. On the noon hour line, the distance of the equinox curve from the winter and summer solstitial curves are 44mm and 72mm, respectively. Applying commonly used methods of calculation, we find that the angle between the axis of the cone and the generator of the conical surface is 30.5° and the resulting original gnomon length is 88mm. On the basis of these data the intended latitude is 40°, agreeing admirably with the 40.8° of the site. Consequently, the conical sundial from Villa A of Oplontis is of very good accuracy.",
